Tamil Hindu Wedding Guide (Malaysia)
Updated
Tamil Hindu weddings are the most common Indian weddings in Malaysia, and almost everything turns on the muhurtham: the short auspicious window, fixed with the family priest, when the thali is tied. Expect an early morning at a temple or temple hall, then a vegetarian lunch on banana leaf.
Customs differ a great deal between families, communities and temples. Treat this as an outline to talk through with your priest and elders, not a script.
Key ceremonies, in order
1. Weeks to months before
Nichayathartham (engagement)
The families formally agree the match and exchange gift trays. They often confirm the wedding date and muhurtham too.
2. A day or a few days before
Pandha Kaal / Muhurtha Kaal
A bamboo or wooden post is blessed and put up to begin the wedding preparations and invoke blessings.
3. The day before
Nalangu
A light-hearted family ritual with turmeric, sandalwood and a few games, held for the bride and groom separately or together.
4. Wedding morning
Ganapathi puja and Kashi Yatra
Prayers to Ganapathi to clear any obstacles. In some families the groom then pretends to leave for Kashi, until the bride's father or brother talks him round.
5. Wedding morning, before the muhurtham
Maalai Maatral and Oonjal
After exchanging garlands, the couple sit on a swing. Women of the family sing and circle them with coloured rice balls.
6. Just before the muhurtham
Kanyadhanam
The bride's parents place her hand in the groom's. Water is often poured over their joined hands.
7. At the muhurtham
Mangalya Dharanam (thali tying)
The groom ties the thali at the muhurtham, usually with three knots, to nadaswaram and thavil music. Guests shower the couple with akshathai (blessed rice).
8. After the thali
Saptapadi and Ammi Midhithal
The couple take seven steps around the sacred fire. The groom places the bride's foot on a grinding stone and puts on her metti (toe rings).
9. Same day, or a later day
Reception and Grihapravesam
Lunch, and blessings from the elders. Later, the bride is welcomed into her new home.

Notes for Malaysia
- Popular temple dates book out early, especially in auspicious months. Contact the temple office as soon as the muhurtham is fixed.
- Non-Muslim marriages must be registered (ROM) under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 (Act 164), through the National Registration Department (JPN). JPN displays your notice of marriage for 21 days; the solemnisation can take place from day 22, and the application lapses after six months. You need two witnesses aged 21 or over. Requirements change, so check the current rules on the JPN website before you apply.
- A temple or gurdwara ceremony counts as your legal registration only if the venue has an Assistant Registrar of Marriages appointed by JPN. Not every temple or gurdwara has one, and JPN restricts this route to Malaysian citizens; you still apply through JPN first. Ask the venue when you book.
- In the Klang Valley, you can look at temple and community halls, or hotel ballrooms for an evening reception.
- Temple halls usually require vegetarian food. Each may have its own rules on music and decor, as well as timings.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Tamil Hindu wedding ceremony take?
The ceremony around the muhurtham usually takes two to three hours. Rituals such as Nalangu take place on the days before; timings vary by family and temple.
What is the thali?
The thali is the sacred wedding necklace tied around the bride's neck by the groom at the muhurtham, usually with three knots. Its design differs between communities and families.
How do we register a Hindu or Sikh marriage in Malaysia?
Non-Muslim marriages are registered with JPN under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976. JPN displays your notice for 21 days, the solemnisation can be held from day 22 within six months, and you need two witnesses aged 21 or over. If your temple or gurdwara has a JPN-appointed Assistant Registrar (not all do), the religious ceremony can also be the legal solemnisation.
